Background information
In July of this year, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre-Europe participated in a gathering to mark the 80th anniversary of the 1938 Evian Conference, called for that year by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to discuss measures to rescue Jewish fugitives from Nazism.
On show, in the meeting room, was the original guest log book of the 33 delegations hosted, of which only one Ambassador publicly invited “100,000” Jewish refuge seekers, on condition that they were “bachelors and farmers” – the Dominican Republic. The winds of war limited the result.Evian became called “Hitler’s Green Light to Genocide.” It was followed five months later, on 9 November, by “the Night of Broken Glass,” or known in Germany as the “Reichspogrom,” the precursor to the Holocaust and the appeasement setting the path to World War Two.
