Luís Esteves
Luís Esteves joined the ANOP news agency on 11 October 1977 as a correspondent in Geneva, where he was also for many years a correspondent for Radiodiversão Portuguesa (RDP), RTP and Diário de Notícias.
He was the first Portuguese journalist in Switzerland accredited by the United Nations and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
He immediately joined ACANU and then elected as a president twice during his membership, which lasted for three decades.
In 1983 he left the agency, but returned in 1984, two years before the creation of the Lusa agency, resulting from the merger of the two Portuguese agencies (ANOP and NP).
In 2001, celebrating his 25-year career as a correspondent in Switzerland, Luís Esteves was honoured by Portugal, by ACANU and by personalities of Swiss society.
On the occasion, he was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of Merit, awarded by the then President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio, represented at the time by the Portuguese ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Álvaro Mendonça e Moura.
Luis Esteves passed away on 30 November 2010, aged 73, a victim of Parkinson's disease.
